internet explorer 6 - disable drop down issue in IE6 and IE7 -

I am showing the category and sub class in a drop down box and I do not want the main category drop down value any user To be selected by.

So I have implemented disabled = "disabled" and it works fine in Firefox, Chrome and IE8, but it does not work in IE6 and IE7 is.
